Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar — better known as Vijay and affectionately called “Thalapathy” by his fans — is an Indian actor, playback singer and politician. With a career spanning more than three decades in Tamil cinema, he has established himself as one of the most commercially successful and beloved stars in South India and beyond.
Early Life & Entry into Cinema
Vijay was born in Chennai to director S. A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar. He began acting as a child artist in the mid-1980s and made his debut as a lead actor with the film Naalaiya Theerpu (1992) at the age of 18. His early roles laid the groundwork for the star he would become.
Rise to Stardom
The turning point in Vijay’s career came with the romance film Poove Unakkaga (1996) which brought him widespread recognition. He went on to star in several major hits such as Ghilli (2004), Thuppakki (2012), Mersal (2017) and Leo (2023). Known for his charismatic dancing, versatile performances and ability to connect with mass audiences, he earned the title “Thalapathy” (commander) from his fans.
