Zohran Kwame Mamdani Biography

Early Life & Background

Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to academic Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, both of Indian descent. His father is a Gujarati Muslim and his mother a Punjabi Hindu, giving Mamdani a richly diverse heritage. He moved with his family to the United States at age seven and was educated in New York City public schools.

Education & Early Career

He attended Bronx High School of Science and earned his bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. Before entering politics, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor and was active in music and organizing.
